Q:  What benefits can we look forward to with Evanced application hosting?

A:

  • More frequent upgrade cycles.
  • HA (High-Availability).
  • Responsive, snappy applications - even with commonly slower tasks, such as reporting.
  • Reduced hardware costs, electricity usage, and labor.
  • First response for security fixes and work-stop defects.

Q:  How reliable/stable are your servers?

A:  Our applications run in a HA (High-Availability), elastic load-balanced multi-server infrastructure using Amazon Web Services.  AWS is currently the most popular cloud computing provider in the U.S.  They make a service commitment to their customers of 99.95% uptime and typically exceed this commitment.  They are trusted by thousands of corporations and organizations, including Netflix, NASA, and even the Department of Defense.

Q:  Will the transfer require any downtime?

A:  There will be a small amount of downtime, typically in the range of 10-15 minutes.  Transfers are usually performed in the early morning hours before your library opens, so the impact to your patrons will be minimal.

Q:  Do I need to be present during the transfer?

A:  Not at all.

Q:  How do you connect to our server to get the files you need?

A:  A day or two before the transfer we will remotely connect to the server using a remote connection app called LogMeIn Rescue.  LMI Rescue is most often used for quick, one-time connections, but can also be configured (with your permission) for short-term unattended access.

LMI Rescue will ask you for your administrator credentials.  These credentials are stored securely in the LMI Rescue app where even we cannot see them.  We will request enough unattended access time to cover the transfer date, plus one additional day in case troubleshooting is needed.  As an example, we may first connect to your server on a Thursday afternoon to setup unattended access, and have it expire Saturday afternoon.  This gives us enough time to perform the transfer Friday morning, with a spare day (Saturday morning) allotted in case the Friday morning transfer was not possible for whatever reason.  The LMI Rescue app will auto-delete when our unattended access expires.

Unattended access is used only with your permission and you will see a notification window appear on-screen whenever we are connected.  You are able to cancel the unattended access before the automatic expiration period.  If you choose not to permit unattended access we will just need you to be available during the transfer time.

Q:  Will my URL change?

A:  Yes.  The URL for your application will look similar to this:

http://yourlibraryname.evanced.info

We typically match whatever naming convention you are using with your website.  If your library's website address is plainfieldlib.org, your application URL will be plainfieldlib.evanced.info, assuming it is not already in use.  We will provide your new URLs in the post-transfer email.  The URLs can be provided pre-transfer if requested.  You can work with us to specify your new URL before the transfer, but not after.

Q:  Will you redirect my patrons to the new URL?

A:  Yes.  We will add redirect files to your server that will redirect patrons or staff still visiting your old URLs.  The redirects will work for however long your server remains online.  This should provide plenty of time to update links on your website and the bookmarks in your browsers.

Q:  How will I know when the transfer is done?

A:  We will notify you by email.  We can also call you if requested.

Q:  Will email functionality still work?

A:  The short answer is 'Yes'.  The application will continue to work with your own email server or service if that is how you have it configured currently.  However, you can select to use our email service at no additional cost.  If you are currently using your own on-site email server and wish to continue doing so, you may need to allow incoming access through your firewall to your email server from our IP addresses:

107.21.219.232

107.23.147.38

107.23.135.42

207.250.85.106

207.250.104.106

207.250.104.108

Q:  Do we have to pay for Evanced hosting?

A:  Hosting prices are based on your library's population/circulation size.  Many of our customers have a low enough population that they are eligible for free hosting.  If your library's circulation is in the millions, there will be a charge.  If you're curious, please email us:  support [at] evancedsolutions [dot] com

Q:  Will my hosting price increase if our population grows?

A:  We have never increased a customer's hosting price due to a population increase after the fact.
