FAQ: What does the difficulty level in Wandoo Reader do?

Q: What does the Program Difficulty setting in Wandoo Reader do? Can we change or remove it?

A: Program difficulty is a feature of the game themes of Wandoo Reader. There are three difficulty levels that are designed to help a player move more quickly or slowly through the game.

  • They cannot be customized by the library.
  • They roughly correspond with the following reading levels:

Easy
Grades 1 - 2
1 Book = 100 credits
1 Page = 4 credits
1 Minute = 8 credits
1 Custom Logging Type = 8 Credits

Medium
Grades 3 - 4
1 Book = 100 credits
1 Page = 2 credits
1 Minute =  4 credits
1 Custom Logging Type = 4 credits

Hard
Grades 5 - 6
1 Book = 100 credits
1 Page = 1 credits
1 Minute =  2 credits
1 Custom Logging Type = 2 credits

We compared national reading data for minutes and pages and tried to come up with a method that would allow kids of disparate reading levels to progress through the game at roughly the same speed. These are metrics we hope to continually update, refine and expand to provide more granular reading levels for readers of all ages.

The staff-side of the program will auto-suggest a difficulty level based on the grade of the reader. This can be changed.

  • Difficulty levels only apply to programs counting minutes and pages. Though they appear on programs asking for book logging, books typically self-level. Better readers select more challenging books. What level a player chooses on a books program won't have any impact on their game play experience.
  • Easy, medium and hard are standard video game lingo. Children are familiar with playing games on different difficulty levels.
  • Difficulty levels do not affect prizes or certificates. They have no relationship to anything the library does. They only affect how quickly players pass from level to level in the game.
  • Difficulty levels do not apply to the Simple Theme. They only apply to the game themes.
